Description
Original facsimile edition. First published in the US in 1935, ''North to the Orient'' is a classic travel memoir written by the wife of famous aviator Charles Lindbergh, who was herself the pioneering American aviator and author Anne Morrow Lindbergh. The book beautifully chronicles her 1931 journey with her husband, Charles Lindbergh, as they mapped out potential commercial airline routes across the Arctic frontier. It won the inaugural National Book Award for Nonfiction in 1936.
The couple traveled in a small Lockheed Sirius seaplane along the Great Circle Route, flying from New York through Canada, Alaska, Siberia, and down into Japan and China.
Beyond being a passenger, Mrs Lindbergh she served as the crew's novice radio operator and co-pilot, frequently operating heavy equipment and managing communications. The text details their interactions with isolated communities, including indigenous Eskimos on King Island and Russian fur trappers in Kamchatka. The final portions of the book document their volunteer relief flights assisting victims of the catastrophic 1931 Central China floods.
Lindbergh reflects on the rapid evolution of aviation, the beauty of the raw northern landscapes, the difficulties of navigating a high-profile marriage, and her frustration with trivial, sexist questions from reporters related to her being a female who flies.
