The Desert Beneath: A Complete Guide to Soil Composition for Cactus Cultivation: The Science of Desert Soils, Drainage, and Root Health for Serious Cactus Growers

Most cactus books tell you what to do. This one tells you why.

After fifty years growing, studying, and writing about desert plants,
Ngang Valery has distilled everything he knows about the single most
important and most misunderstood factor in cactus cultivation:
the soil beneath the plant.

The Desert Beneath is not a general cactus care guide. It is the most
complete reference ever written on cactus soil science covering
drainage physics, pH chemistry, root zone biology, mineral availability,
and the exact soil formulas refined across five decades of hands-on
growing.

Inside you will discover:

✅ Why fast-draining soil is necessary but never sufficient and what
else your mix needs to get right

✅ The truth about soil pH that almost no cactus guide ever mentions
and how wrong pH silently undermines everything else you do correctly

✅ How to build a custom soil mix from scratch for any cactus species,
any climate, and any growing situation

✅ The biology of root rot what actually causes it, why it happens
even in well-draining mixes, and how to prevent it permanently

✅ Species-specific soil profiles for ten of the most popular and
challenging cacti in cultivation

✅ How water quality, pot material, and seasonal changes affect soil
chemistry over time

✅ The step-by-step soil reset that can rescue a struggling plant and
transform its performance within a single growing season

Whether you are a beginner who wants to get the foundation right from
day one, or an experienced grower whose plants never quite perform the
way they should, The Desert Beneath gives you the scientific
understanding and the practical tools to grow cacti the way they were
designed to grow in soil that mirrors the desert floor they evolved on.

This is the book serious cactus growers have been waiting for.
