Description

The Sumerian King List opens with a line that has launched a thousand theories: “After the kingship descended from heaven, the kingship was in Eridu.”

Eridu. A mound in the Iraqi desert, twelve kilometers south of Ur, where eighteen superimposed temple levels descend through four thousand years of continuous construction to a single room at the bottom—two meters by three, mudbrick on sand, a niche in one wall facing nothing. The city the Mesopotamian tradition calls the first. The place where civilization began, according to the oldest political record in existence.

The Arrival investigates what the ancient Mesopotamian texts genuinely say about the beings they called the Anunnaki—and dramatizes the world those texts describe, if the hypothesis holds. Seven investigation chapters examine the Eridu Genesis, the Enuma Elish, the Sumerian King List, Babylonian astronomy, and the modern interpreters who read these tablets as literal history. Seven fictional interludes bring the marshland to life: the descent, the first camp, the survey, the founding of a city in the reeds.

Every claim is sourced. Every invention is disclosed. A Constraint Appendix at the back maps each fictional scene to what the texts say and what the author made up—read the investigation for the evidence, read the story for the experience, then decide for yourself what the tradition means.

The investigation plays fair. Where the textual tradition is documented, the book says so without hedging. Where the literal-arrival reading is one interpretation among several, the book identifies the problems. Where the Nibiru orbital thesis is unsupported—no detection by WISE, no stable orbit model, MUL.APIN equating the term with Jupiter—the book states it plainly. And where the genuine questions remain open—the Sumerian language isolate, the King List’s base-60 reign lengths, the density of innovation at the head of the Persian Gulf—the book carries them forward without pretending they have been answered.

This is a work of narrative nonfiction, written to be read, not looked at. There are no photographs or illustrations. The lines are drawn in prose.
