Description
The sand dunes found in Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve are the tallest in North America. Star Dune alone reaches a height of over 750 feet. Although the park encompasses different ecological areas, it is the 30 square-mile dune field that attracts most people. The dune field consists of several dune types. The main dune field is mostly made up of star and reversing dunes. In contrast, barchan and parabolic dunes tend to form along the edge of the main dune field and on the sand sheet in front. These differing formations make photographing the sand dunes an immersive experience, a journey into a surreal landscape of blowing and shifting sand. The photographs in this issue capture the natural beauty of the sand dunes: their curves, shadows, textures, tones, and details.
