Description
On November 24, 2022, E. Jean Carroll, an American journalist, author, and advice columnist, sued Donald J. Trump, the former president of the United States, in New York Supreme Court for defamation and battery (which she added under the Adult Survivors Act). The trial lasted for two weeks, where Carroll testified for three days, claiming Trump attacked her in a department store’s lingerie section during 1995 or 1996. She said she was sexually assaulted while she and Trump were in the dressing room together.
Trump has denied the incident ever took place, and that he did not know her, never met her, and she was “not his type”. When Carol’s lawyers presented him with a photo of them together back in 1987 from an NBC event during a disposition, Trump had mistaken Carroll to be his ex-wife, Marla Maples.
The jury, consisted of six men and three women, deliberated for just three hours before finding Trump liable for defaming Carroll and for sexual abuse (but not rape). The award amount was $5 million in the civil case, which Trump had vowed to appeal.
Carroll and her lawyers brought additional charges against Trump after he continued denying the charges and defaming her after the trial.
On January 26, 2024, another nine-person jury, after deliberating for three hours, ordered Trump to pay an additional $83.3 million, of which $18.3 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive damages. Trump and his lawyers are appealing the decision.
The unsealed detailed court records describe their encounter 27 years ago at the luxury department store on Fifth Avenue in New York City.
